What is Chair Yoga?

Chair yoga is a gentle practice in which postures are performed while seated and standing with the aid of a chair. The chair becomes a prop and piece of equipment within the practice, alleviating the need to get up and down from the floor.

Just like a regular yoga practice, Chair yoga increases flexibility, strength, and body awareness. We include standing poses, and the chair is used to help with and improve balance.

Just about any standard yoga pose can be modified for chair yoga, including backbends, twists, hip openers and forward folds. This makes Chair Yoga an excellent exercise for all ages.

“If you want to keep doing things later in life, you have to never stop doing them.” ~Singer Gloria Gaynor

Hi, I’m Laura Hardy Noel

Growing up in the sport of gymnastics, I learned early on the value of self-discipline and determination. After graduating from Purdue University, I taught elementary school before staying home to raise my own children.

For the past twenty years I have found a way to combine my love for teaching with my interest in sharing the benefits of movement through Dance Moves by Laura Noel.

In my free time I like challenging myself with a wide variety of exercise, enjoying early morning coffee, relaxing with family and friends, and traveling far and wide with my husband and children.

Why Do I Offer Virtual Chair Yoga

Yoga Reimagined for All Abilities

During the pandemic in 2020, we all adapted to social distancing. I created this class to connect my students and to help keep them active. As we get older, it can sometimes be hard to get to an in-person class. This drives me to continue to offer virtual classes for my students.

Having Yoga class means a lot to me. Since gym is no longer an option, yoga gives me the excercise I need. I get arobic excercise on the tread mill and mowing the lawn. Yoga fills the gap. The level of difficulty is just right. Looking forward to using weights.

Not only do I enjoy the class buy seeing friendly faces and feeling part of a group, lifts my spirit. Hopefully some day we can meet in person.

God Bless You (a letter I received when I started the Zoom Chair Yoga classes during the pandemic)

Testimonials

  • Fosters a Supportive & Engaging Learning Environment

"Laura gives very clear instructions,  all the while reminding us that we are in charge of our bodies, and helps us to adjust movements to accommodate our needs. She fosters a supportive and engaging learning environment.  She adapts yoga poses for seated or chair supported practice. My time in Laura's classes has helped me with my balance, flexibility, posture, and strength. We usually start the class with gentle warm ups and end with mindful breathing promoting calmness."

  • A springboard for the stage

We are so thankful that Julia took many classes with Mrs Noel. Mrs Noel taught Julia the foundations to success as dancer. Julia loved to dance and sing as a young child and we opted to choose all local classes to enroll her in. We never traveled far, or spent a fortune on her training. We wanted her engaged with a teacher that would give her the confidence and continue her love of the stage. We found all of this in Mrs Noels class. These early classes, along with workshops along the way, gave her all the skills she needed to be in all the school musicals and be apart of the Zionsville Show Choir. We are very thankful for Mrs. Noel. It was exactly what we needed for show choir and musical success.
